How to wear the oversized blazer
If you didn’t spot these on the catwalk or in fashion retail late last summer then as a heads up they are back in for spring and summer 2023. Personally I was sat on the fence for a while, these are clearly a fashion item and so I questioned how much longevity this item would have, but in the end I caved and bought a second hand and a new (oops!).
These jackets can make you feel wonderful if you want to make a statement or indeed feel physically a bit smaller. The key to gaining the confidence of the look though is how you pair them (because unless you are the unrealistic catwalk model size, relative proportions are everything).
DO make them look oversized by pairing with tighter fit items. Catwalk examples are paired with mini skirts, cigarette or very slim fitting trousers if you have the legs are perfect.
DO wear with understated tops underneath, again to highlight their oversize. So vests in summer, close fitting jumpers (round neck not polo) in winter.
DO look for jackets with shoulder pads – they keep the blazer hanging straight down, nice and tidy.
DO consider big earrings for an even 80’s er look (oh and lip gloss!)
DON’T wear with maxi skirts – this will oversize everything!
DON’T buy a size up if its already listed as an oversized jacket – the retailer will have already set the proportions right including sleeves for example.
The gorgeous velvet blazer shown in the image above is from online retailer Reserved.com
