How To Style Yourself For Interviews
Let’s be honest: what you wear to an interview does matter.
Not because it should outweigh your experience or skills — it shouldn’t — but because it affects first impressions and, just as importantly, how confident you feel walking into the room.
Interviewers start forming an opinion almost immediately, often before you’ve even said hello. That opinion is based on their understanding of what clothes, colours, and styles mean in their organisation. They know the culture. They know the norms. Your outfit is an early signal that you do too.
And there’s another side to it. What you wear changes how you show up. There’s good evidence that clothes influence mindset and performance. When you dress like someone who belongs in the role, you’re more likely to feel — and act — that way.
Start with the company, not your wardrobe
Before you plan an outfit, take a few minutes to understand how the organisation dresses. Check the interview invite, the website, or how employees present themselves online. Plenty of workplaces are more relaxed these days, but not all. Knowing the baseline avoids awkward over- or under-dressing.
Decide what you want to signal
Once you know the norm, think about how you want to be perceived. Calm and reliable? Sharp and detail-focused? Creative but professional? Then choose clothes that quietly support that message. Clean lines, good fit, and simplicity usually win here.
Wear something that makes you feel capable
Try the outfit on properly — not five minutes before you leave. Ask yourself: Do I feel confident I could do this job in these clothes? If the answer’s no, tweak it. Sometimes it’s just better shoes or a more structured top. You deserve clothes that back you up.
